Terence Crawford Has No Doubt Who Shakur Stevenson’s Toughest Opponent Will Be

Terence Crawford has seen the skillset of Shakur Stevenson up close and personal.

The two world champions are friends and occasional sparring partners despite the difference in weight, often sharpening their tools ahead of high-level title bouts.

Stevenson is currently WBC Champion at 135, the division in which ‘Bud’ Crawford won his first world honours before conquering 140 and 147.

With some of the best defence in boxing today, not many at lightweight are given much of a chance of getting close to him, but Crawford is under no illusions of the threat of one Gervonta Davis.

Speaking on the Million Dollaz Worth of Game podcast, the two-weight undisputed champion praised ‘Tank.’

“One thing I can say about Tank is he’s smart, he can box, and he’s explosive. I see that being Shakur’s toughest fight, because of the power. Everybody know Tank punchin’.”

Shakur Stevenson is a much sought after fight ,one with brewing social media beef and an incredible level of talent. Both undefeated, should they meet just now it would be a lightweight unification with Davis bringing the WBA belt to the table.

Unfortunately, promotional politics have stood in the way in the past. That may change given Stevenson has one fight left in his deal with Top Rank. In the meantime, he defends his belt in July against Artem Harutyunyan.

First up is ‘Tank’, who faces fellow undefeated southpaw and the man who beat Harutyunyan, Frank Martin, on June 15.

Terence Crawford has doubled down on the promise that he would remain in the welterweight division if Gervonta Davis wanted to move up and fight him.

Following a career-best victory over Errol Spence Jr to become undisputed at 147lbs, ‘Bud’ Crawford is readying a move up to super-welterweight to win titles in one last division before he hangs up the gloves.

Despite those plans seeming solid, he has been consistently asked about the potential of a fight with lightweight, ‘Tank’ Davis. The questions stem from a clip on social media in which the smaller man claims he could stop Crawford quickly.

Despite beliefs from ‘Tank’s team that the narrative is ‘dumb’ and that he was initially joking in the recording, the undisputed welterweight champion doesn’t seem to be playing around with his invite.

He told Sway that he would be there waiting should the Baltimore native ‘want to dare to be great.’

“Yeah, if he wanna dare to be great and be like all the other fighters that’s moving up two weight classes. Tell him come up here. He said I got a glass chin. So tell him come and touch it. At 147. I make 147 for him.”

“Then what the people gonna say? ‘Oh he’s beatin’ up on little guys.’”

‘Tank’ has also played a part in this stellar year for boxing, having beaten previously-undefeated Ryan Garcia three months before the Spence-Crawford fight.

He’s now looking at a return to the ring towards the end of the year and, despite the buzz around a Crawford fight, will likely be at 135lbs where he continues to move towards world titles.

Bud Crawford does not seem to be messing around when it comes to Tank Davis.

Ever since defeating Errol Spence Jr. in dominant fashion a couple of weeks ago, Terence “Bud” Crawford has called out just about every top fighter within 20 or so pounds of his weight class.

He has floated the possibility of fighting Canelo Alvarez at a catchweight. He even jawed with Jermell Charlo during the Spence fight. Now, it appears he has Gervonta “Tank” Davis squarely in his sights.

Speaking on the Earn Your Leisure podcast, Crawford responded to a comment calling Davis a “champion”.

What champ? Who’s undisputed at 135lbs? Devin Haney’s got all the belts, he’s the champ, nobody else is the champ. Tank’s the bigger draw. There’s weight classes for a reason, tell him to come up here with the big boys, I’ll welcome him.

Crawford is technically right: Devin Haney has all of the lightweight titles at this moment in time.

Finding the right weight

In order to set up a fight between Crawford and Davis, “Tank” would have to move up substantially in weight. Crawford has already mentioned he would only stay at 147 pounds for a fight with Davis.

The Japanese boxer would have to move up in weight for it to happen.

Gervonta “Tank” Davis has been on a tear for the past half-decade.

Since April of 2018, he has won four different world titles in three different weight divisions and hasn’t lost any of his 10 bouts. Nine of those fights were ended via knockouts.

Most recently, Davis took down the toughest opponent of his career, Ryan Garcia, in the 7th round with a brutal body shot. It was the test everyone wanted for both fighters, and Davis passed with flying colors. Now, everyone is wondering what challenge Davis will take on next.

Renowned boxing legend Floyd Mayweather has an idea for Tank: set up a fight with “The Monster”, Naoya Inoue.

“I think (Inoue) is a hell of a fighter. I would like to see him fight Gervonta at a catchweight. That’d be a hell of a fight.”

Can it actually happen?

The issue with Mayweather’s proposed bout would come down squarely to weight.

Inoue has fought at several different weights, with his most recent defeat over Stephen Fulton coming at 122 pounds, the heaviest he’s ever fought at.

Davis’ lowest weight has been 130, he has settled in at 135 pounds and has even fought at 140.

It’s not out of the realm of possibility for Davis to come in at a lower weight since he has done it before, but asking Inoue to tack on so many pounds seems like a stretch. The Japanese fighter might be up for it, but it would take a long training camp and strength program.

In terms of in-ring entertainment, the fight would be a true spectacle. Both Davis and Inoue have won everything up for grabs to this point and have showcased legendary talent in all of their fights.
