The Japanese boxer would have to move up in weight for it to happen.

Gervonta “Tank” Davis has been on a tear for the past half-decade.

Since April of 2018, he has won four different world titles in three different weight divisions and hasn’t lost any of his 10 bouts. Nine of those fights were ended via knockouts.

Most recently, Davis took down the toughest opponent of his career, Ryan Garcia, in the 7th round with a brutal body shot. It was the test everyone wanted for both fighters, and Davis passed with flying colors. Now, everyone is wondering what challenge Davis will take on next.

Renowned boxing legend Floyd Mayweather has an idea for Tank: set up a fight with “The Monster”, Naoya Inoue.

“I think (Inoue) is a hell of a fighter. I would like to see him fight Gervonta at a catchweight. That’d be a hell of a fight.”

Can it actually happen?

The issue with Mayweather’s proposed bout would come down squarely to weight.

Inoue has fought at several different weights, with his most recent defeat over Stephen Fulton coming at 122 pounds, the heaviest he’s ever fought at.

Davis’ lowest weight has been 130, he has settled in at 135 pounds and has even fought at 140.

It’s not out of the realm of possibility for Davis to come in at a lower weight since he has done it before, but asking Inoue to tack on so many pounds seems like a stretch. The Japanese fighter might be up for it, but it would take a long training camp and strength program.

In terms of in-ring entertainment, the fight would be a true spectacle. Both Davis and Inoue have won everything up for grabs to this point and have showcased legendary talent in all of their fights.

Despite the gulf in weight classes between the pair, there has been talk of an all-American mega fight between Terence Crawford and Gervonta Davis.

However, Davis’ trainer has poured cold water on that speculation – as well revealed who he believes his charge will take on next.

In a recent interview with FightHype, Calvin Ford claimed ‘Tank’ was just “playing around” when he stated he would stop Crawford.

Crawford – who recently became undisputed champion in the welterweight ranks – said recently he would stick around in that division if ‘Tank’ wanted to jump up from lightweight for a challenge.

He also added that a rematch with Isaac Cruz was also the frontrunner for the Baltimore puncher’s next fight.

“He was just playing around, end of story. ‘Tank’ does that to get an eyebrow raise out of people.”

“It’s like when they talk about Inoue. He’s weight classes below, but everyone still says something about that fight.”

Gervonta Davis

“Right now, we’re just waiting on that contract to come across our desk for who we’re fighting next and who we’re getting ready for. My thinking is that it’ll be ‘Pitbull.’

With Devin going up and Shakur having plans to fight Lomachenko next year, I think that’s the direction we’re going.”

Davis has not boxed since his stunning stoppage victory over Ryan Garcia in April, and was only last month released from a brief jail sentence.

Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz is one of only two men to have taken Davis to the final bell, having lost a competitive decision back in 2021 in what many believe was ‘Tank’s toughest fight as a professional.

Davis was a clear winner on the night even despite a hand injury and ‘Pitbull’ failed to impress in his most recent outing, but a rematch may make sense to get the former back into the swing of things.

Floyd Mayweather is currently overseeing the next move for Gervonta Davis, with many opponents said to be in the frame for the Pay Per View star.

Davis dispatched Mario Barrios and Isaac Cruz in 2021 to take his impressive record to 26-0 with 24 stoppages. He’s now on the lookout for another big name to share his considerable spotlight with this year.

Names mentioned include lightweight rivals Vasyl Lomachenko and Teofimo Lopez. However, a mandated battle with unified champion George Kambosos Jr. remains on the cards in the future.

Having campaigned at 135 and 140 over the last twelve months, it’s no secret, though, that ‘Tank’ wants to rule in another weight division.

GERVONTA DAVIS 147

Welterweight will happen sooner rather than later, and Davis needs a dance partner to test the 147 water.

Enter Adrien Broner.

‘The Problem’ is not huge at the higher limit and would be the perfect foil for Davis to prove his credentials for a world title shot.

Floyd Mayweather and Gervonta Davis vs Adrien Broner

Broner is on the way back after a tumultuous year culminating in hospitalization and a move to selling content on a well-known app.

He needs the money and has featured on Pay Per View in the past. Therefore, he should be a name considered by Mayweather and Leonard Ellerbe for a showdown in 2022.

Davis already sells himself. So adding Broner into the mix, especially with the Floyd Mayweather history thrown in, makes absolute sense.

They also have a history of rivalry dating back to 2015.

ADRIEN BRONER

There’s a danger Broner could fight a lesser name, not look good and end his waning star earlier than necessary. Furthermore, Mayweather and Ellerbe have to consider the possibility.

Other than nailing down Kambosos or even Devin Haney for Davis, Mayweather Promotions have few appealing options at 135. The same goes for 140, as the only champion in that class is Josh Taylor.

Next month, the Scot is tied up against Jack Catterall, leaving him off the table until the summer. If Mayweather did want that fight for Davis in the first place, they could have asked the WBA to make their fighter mandatory when he held the super-lightweight ‘regular’ title.

Instead, they decided to drop the strap, meaning Taylor is not part of their plans.

Broner, however, could be that name they need to begin ‘Tank’s’ plans north of 135.

Davis could look good in that fight. Broner needs the payday, so it’s a win, win for everybody involved.

Now a decade into his pro career and with a 100% win rate in all 29 of his fights, there are few people whose respect Gervonta Davis hasn’t earned – but apparently he feels disrespected by lightweight rival, Shakur Stevenson.

‘Tank’ has proven himself to be a real badman from Baltimore with vicious KO wins against the likes of Leo Santa Cruz in 2020, a protracted beatdown on Cuban Yuriorkis Gamboa in 2019 and most recently back in April, a devilish body shot saw him take a high profile PPV win over the much-hyped Ryan Garcia at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Speaking to Culture Boxing, the current WBA world lightweight champion explains why he no longer has any respect for the former WBO featherweight and super-featherweight belt holder Shakur Stevenson after Stevenson suggested Davis wouldn’t dare get into the ring with him.

Gervonta Davis

“He throw shots, then want to be buddy-buddy, know what I mean?

Saying all this stuff on Twitter then running into my locker room and wanting to take a picture and all that type stuff. You feel me? He’s got to stand on that. We ain’t cool no more. That’s why I’m in this mode. I ain’t got no friends in this.

Don’t go on the internet saying I wouldn’t dare step in the ring with you – that’s disrespect.”

This is not the first time Davis has spoken out over Stevenson – earlier in the month he doubted the power the 25-year-old carries into the ring.

That said, Stevenson has seen plenty of success in lower divisions, and the slick southpaw moved up to lightweight in his last fight in April, brushing aside Shuichiro Yoshino with a 6th-round knockout. As such he is now campaigning in the same circles as Tank, so a head-to-head between the two young Americans is a mouth-watering prospect indeed.

Liam Walsh’s world-title dream ended in a third-round knockout defeat by Floyd Mayweather’s protege Gervonta Davis at the Copper Box Arena in London.

The 31-year-old had waited almost five years to become a world champion since the collapse of a fight scheduled with Ricky Burns in 2012, but was simply outclassed by one of the planet’s most promising fighters.
America’s Davis, 22 and from Baltimore, is a talent to the extent his promoter and mentor Mayweather insists he is capable of reaching a similar level to the one he once graced.
That may prove a stretch, but the IBF super-featherweight champion is swiftly proving himself an exceptional fighter who can be expected to remain a leading figure during the coming decade if he retains his focus amid the trappings that will come his way.
This was only his 18th professional fight, and the 17th he has won inside the distance. Walsh, meanwhile, is capable of recovering from his first defeat; it simply proved his misfortune to be matched against a champion of Davis’ calibre.

The American set an impressively high pace from the opening bell, landing with both jabs and left hands that forced Walsh to abandon his southpaw stance and switch to orthodox.
If it was not already, the size of the task he faced became clear beyond doubt in the second, when the American’s consistent speed and accuracy ensured he continued to land further hurtful left hands.
A particularly big left hurt Walsh in the third as he increasingly struggled to defend himself, and sensing his vulnerability Davis continued landing that same punch with increasing power until he forced the first knockdown.
The challenger returned to his feet after a count of nine but remained unsteady and the fight should have been ended there and then. Davis instead resumed his hurtful assault, forcing referee Michael Alexander to intervene amid Walsh’s protests after two minutes and 11 seconds.
Walsh’s twin brother Ryan had earlier won the British featherweight title outright after making his third successful defence, stopping Marco McCullough in the 11th round.
There was also a third stoppage victory from three for promising heavyweight Daniel Dubois, 19, who knocked out David Howe in only 40 seconds with an explosive right hand.
“He was hurt pretty bad; the referee did his job,” Davis said.
“It was just a matter of time before I got him. I used my boxing IQ and picked my shots. When I connected I got him out of there.
“I’m still on the rise. I became a champion super fast.”

Walsh insisted the fight had been stopped prematurely, saying: “That was a bad stoppage.
“He’s very fast and very active but it was too quick. He won fair and square but in England sometimes they stop the fight too early.
“I’m not saying the result would be different, but give me a chance. I would love to fight him again for next to nothing.”

The Tank took offence to the British promoter and will make it difficult for him to get a contract for the fight against Ryan Garcia

Confirmation of the expected Gervonta Davis-Ryan Garcia bout could be complicated after an interview with promoter Eddie Hearn in which he largely praised ‘Tank’ after his recent win over Hector Luis Garcia, but there was one phrase that didn’t sit well with the Baltimore boxer.

The Matchroom Boxing promoter praised Gervonta and in his attempt to compare him to Mike Tyson, said he was “not a deep thinker” and was not articulate. The way he expressed himself did not please the American, who responded with a blunt message on social media.

Gervonta Davis

“The dangerous thing about Gervonta Davis is that he is not a deep thinker. He’s not an articulate young man,” Hearn explained in an interview with DAZN.

“He’s a bad boy. I don’t mean that in a disrespectful way. He’s a bad motherfucker. Like Mike Tyson, some of these other greats were.

“And that makes them dangerous because they’re fearless, you can’t get inside their head.”

Gervonta Davis has not accepted an offer to fight Ryan Garcia

Eddie Hearn clarified that it was not his intention to disrespect him, but Gervonta disregarded the praise and focused on the sentence where he felt offended and replied that he did not accept the British promoter’s offer to organize the fight against Ryan Garcia because he was “not a deep thinker”.

“I’m not a deep thinker and not being eloquent made me say no to signing that bullshit offer he sent,” Tank Davis wrote on Twitter, alongside an emoji of a sad face.
