He’s chasing greatness, so why not? Spence believes Crawford has what it takes to defeat Canelo

Errol Spence Jr. has been out of the limelight after falling Terence Crawford for the undisputed welterweight title in what was a lopsided fight.

However, he resurfaced over the weekend as a promoter rather than a fighter. That’s because he was backing Frank Martin, who came up short in his fight with Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis after suffering an eighth-round knockout loss.

However, Spence was an open book in the build-up to the right, answering questions about Crawford and whether he thinks he would stand a chance against Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.

“If Crawford wants to challenge himself to be great, let him try to be great,” Spence said.

“I’m with it. I’d be going for Bud if he fights Canelo. I don’t know if he’d win or lose, but if anybody can pull it off, he can pull it off. He’s chasing greatness, so why not?

Canelo came up to 175 and fought [Sergey] Kovalev and the other guy [Dmitrii Bivol], too. If he can do it, and he started at 147, why can’t Crawford do it?”

Crawford keen to fight Canelo

While Crawford is open to fighting Alvarez, the same can’t be said about Canelo, who seems to have changed his mind after previously stating he would be.

Nevertheless, Turki Alalshikh is reportedly keen to get the two men into the ring.

Crawford is set to make his 154-pound but against WBA titleholder Israil Madrimov on August 3, a division Spence is also moving into.

Spence will face super-welterweight titleholder Sebastian Fundora in either October or November.

Spence with lots to think about

While Spence is set to get back into the ring, it appears he has a lot to think about outside of it as well.

He and his long-time trainer Derrick James are suing each other, and the 34-year-old also hinted that retirement may be near.

“I ain’t firm on it, but I can go out the door anytime,” said Spence.
